Celebrating our rich heritage, fostering unity, and supporting Bassa communities across the globe. Join us in strengthening cultural bonds and uplifting every member of our vibrant nation.

The Bassa Tribe is one of the largest ethnic groups in Liberia, representing nearly 18% of the population. Predominantly found in Grand Bassa, Rivercess, Margibi, and Montserrado counties, the Bassa people have a rich cultural heritage that continues to shape Liberia’s identity.
The Bassa are part of the Kru ethnic cluster, known for their resilience and strong traditions. Historically, they migrated from Western Sudan and settled along Liberia’s coastal and inland regions. Today, they are recognized for their contributions to agriculture, trade, and cultural preservation.
The Bassa speak the Bassa language, a tonal language belonging to the Niger-Congo family. Uniquely, the tribe developed its own writing system called the Bassa Vah script, created in the early 1900s by Dr. Thomas Narvin Lewis. This script uses dots and dashes to indicate tones, symbolizing the tribe’s intellectual legacy.
Bassa culture thrives through oral storytelling, music, and dance. Traditional ceremonies feature drumming, chants, and the famous Dekpeh dance, which celebrates bravery and unity. Body art and intricate designs on hands, legs, and backs are common, reflecting beauty and identity. Historically, brass jewelry was popular among the Bassa until the 1930s.
While Christianity is widespread among the Bassa today, traditional beliefs honoring ancestors and spiritual forces remain influential. Secret societies like Poro and Sande play vital roles in social governance and initiation rites.
Urbanization and globalization have influenced Bassa traditions, but cultural organizations and community leaders are working to preserve language, music, and customs for future generations.
